Policing overview: The Hellenic Police operates under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Interior.
1. General information
The Hellenic Police is comprised of both central and regional services. Its Headquarters is the supreme authority over these services within the framework of the Ministry of Interior's policy. For this reason it schedules, directs, oversees and monitors the activities of its services, ensuring the necessary conditions for the exercise of its authority.

The Hellenic Police assumed its present structure in 1984 with the merger of the Gendarmerie (Chorofylaki) and Urban Police Services (Elliniki Astynomia).

3. Structure and organization
The National Chief of Police, who holds the rank of Lieutenant General, directs the service, reporting directly to the Minister of Interior. He is elected to serve for a two-year term and may be extended for one more year. The service's hierarchy includes the Deputy Chief of Police, Chief of Staff and General Inspector, with the latter also holding the rank of Lieutenant General.
Special Services include a Special Violent Crime Squad and a Special Anti-terrorist Unit, as well as Divisions for Forensics, Internal Affairs, International Police Co-operation, Informatics, and Department of Explosive Devices Disposal, in addition to the Police Air Force Service, Special Guards Unit, Border Guards and Unit of Police Dogs.

Police staff consists of police officers and civilians, Border Guards and Special Police Guards. Pay scales for police officers are identical to those of armed forces' officers.
Women and men in the police service receive equal treatment with regard to recruitment, training, working hours, remuneration and gear they are entitled to carry. As of March 2009, over 6.250 women worked for the Hellenic Police, representing more than 11.6 % of the staff.
5. Education / Training
The Police Academy is a self-contained, central service of the Hellenic Police Headquarters. Its objective is to provide training, re-training and education for its officers` corps. The Academy consists of the:
